Issue 1, Spring 2020

Theme: Discipline

Issue 1 explores the theme Discipline, which unfolds over five chapters: Control, Community, Environment, Family and Post-Visibility, featuring Damson Idris, Liz Johnson Artur, Alfredo Jaar, Mowalola, and more.

For the inaugural issue the publication offers the choice of two covers for its print edition. Where one cover features a close-up shot of French model, Omar Ceesay, with cascading blood-red locks of hair - confronting the reader, he is menacing and photographed biting the bullet; another cover features Damson Idris, taken by his reflection in a hand-held mirror. Destabilising inherited notions of masculinity, race and gender, the precariousness of sexuality and the challenges posed by being with and being a male are investigated throughout the issue.

The Discipline edition features intimate portraits, opinion-pieces, confessions and multimedia experiments from creative visionaries including A Sai Ta, designer of cult fashion brand Asai Takeaway; Ib Kamara, stylist and Senior Fashion Editor at Large of i-D magazine; photographer Campbell Addy, amongst a wide selection of London’s most inspiring creatives and emerging talents banding together to collectively tell their own stories. Through contributions from LGBTQ archives, Ajamu X, radical sex activist and photographic artist explores pageantry, love, pleasure, desire, and the erotic. Expect intergenerational debates, hypersexual bodies, feet, and a cock in a glove. High-level fashion abounds.
